Creating My Life

Creating My Life – Not Letting Others Do It For Me

When we are growing up, we are taught to do as we are told. For some of us, this policy follows us into adulthood and creates a situation in which we do not feel like we have control over our own lives. The truth is that we only get one chance at creating our own lives, and we should learn how to do it for ourselves instead of letting others live it for us.

The most important step in learning how to live life for yourself is figuring out exactly what it is that you want. Many people go through life feeling as if they need a change but, when asked what exactly they wish were different, they do not have an answer. Imagine that you did not need a job in order to pay the bills and think about how you would spend your time. This is a great exercise to help determine what would truly bring happiness.

Even worse than the people who do not know what they want are those who know but are constantly making excuses not to do it. Remember, there are always a million reasons as to why something might not work. However, in order to be successful, you only need one reason why it will work. When planning and setting goals, focus on the positive and block out the negative.

Along the same lines, making a change and taking control of your own life may mean cutting off some old ties. People with low self-esteem who do not think that they can achieve their goals are typically hearing this from some outside source. We may think that these people have our best interests at heart, but the truth is that someone who crushes our dreams is not our friend. Remove these negative influences and focus on the people who will remind you of why you can do anything to which you have set your mind.

Once someone has decided what they want to do and reminded themselves that they can do it, it is time to come up with a plan. Some people think that making up their minds is simply enough and that the universe will take care of the rest. However, in order to be successful and create a life worth living, it is necessary to be proactive and create opportunities, not sit by and wait for them to come along.

An important thing to keep in mind is that creating your own life does not mean that you have to do everything on your own. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a sign of someone who knows what they need to do to get things done. Just be careful not to let these helpful people become steamrollers and take over the plans completely.

When we believe that others have our best interests at heart, we sometimes have a tendency to let them take the wheel. However, in order to be truly happy and successful, people must take control over their own lives. Take the reins, but remember that being in control does not mean that it is necessary to go it alone.
